Customizing Terminology
MatchGrid adapts its language to match your sport and organization type. Terminology customization lets you change labels throughout the app so everything feels natural for your users.
Terminology Presets
When you first set up MatchGrid, you select a preset that auto-configures labels:
Common Presets
| Preset | Key Labels |
|---|---|
| High School Conference | School, Game, Venue, Coach |
| Club Age-Based | Club, Match, Location, Age Group |
| Volleyball | Club, Match, Court, Division |
| Basketball | School, Game, Court, Gym |
| Wrestling | School, Dual, Mat, Weight Class |
Presets configure 15+ labels at once, saving you time.
[!TIP] Not sure which preset to choose? Pick the closest match—you can customize individual labels afterward.

After selecting a preset, customize any label:
- Click Settings in the sidebar

Where Terminology Appears
Your custom labels appear throughout:
- Navigation: Sidebar links and headers
- Forms: Create/edit dialogs and fields
- Tables: Column headers and filters
- Reports: Exported schedules and documents
- Notifications: Emails and in-app alerts
[!INFO] Terminology changes are instant and affect all users in your organization. No logout or refresh required.
Visible vs Hidden Levels
Some organization levels can be hidden if you don’t use them:
Example: Simple Club League
Visible: Season, Club, Team, Location Hidden: Federation, Region, League, Division
Hidden levels still exist in the database but don’t appear in the UI.
Changing Visibility
- Click Settings in the sidebar
- Click Terminology in the settings menu
- Scroll down to the Hierarchy Configuration section
- Click the toggle next to each level to show or hide it
- Click Save Changes
Terminology Best Practices
- Be consistent: Use the same terms everywhere
- Match your community: Use terms your coaches and parents know
- Consider plural forms: Both singular and plural are configurable
- Document your choices: Help new admins understand your terminology
- Don’t over-customize: Too many unique terms can confuse users
